<p>So imagine all of the capital investment that would go into the list above for any type of business.  The information age has allowed us to leverage our marketing through the strategic use of search engines and social media, but that doesn&#8217;t mean you put yourself at a zero budget for it!  <a href="http://jimjinright.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/internet-marketing-jinright.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-886" title="internet-marketing-jinright" src="http://jimjinright.info/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/internet-marketing-jinright-225x300.jpg" alt="jim jinright internet marketer" width="158" height="210" /></a>If you are a business owner stay away from people that suggest that the Internet is a free form of marketing.  True certain aspects of it our free but leveraging it for profit requires that you invest in your business.</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Penny Wise and Pound Foolish!</span></h3>
<p>The fact that the Internet is the most powerful form of marketing in the world doesn&#8217;t mean that you should attempt to execute an online marketing strategy by yourself.  What if a business owner decided to build their own tradeshow booth or to design their own company brochures?   If more business is coming from the Internet and there is less of a requirement to cash flow breakfast or dinner meetings where have you allocated those dollars to?  If a business owner cuts down on travel, print, tradeshows, associations, newspaper ads, radio and other items to pursue online marketing, then where did that marketing budget go?</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Secret Web Strategy!</span></h3>
<p>So now you have the <a href="http://jimjinright.info/web-traffic/get-more-web-traffic/">secret Internet marketing strategy</a>!  What is it and which cave did it come out of?  Simple, take your brain back to the list of items that you have always invested in and think about how much you were spending.  If you were spending $50k, $100k or $500k a year on all of those items what percentage of that budget has going into your SEO, SEM or Social?  So if you want success with your online marketing then take a percentage of that budget, say 50% and then compare the results!</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Economy Is Not An Excuse For Failure!</span></h3>
<p>Why do some business owners go out of business while others expand?  The answer is adaptability!  It&#8217;s true that the economy has been troublesome, but the bigger issue is that the entire marketing paradigm has been shifted upside down.  I know what it cost to invest in tradeshows, print advertising and the other methods listed above and as much as those items are still needed in certain situations there is no comparison to the return on investment that comes from the Internet.  Don&#8217;t allow the bad economy to become an excuse for your lack of adaptability to the new world of marketing.</p>
<p>If you are a business owner and you are trying to get more customers via the Internet then don&#8217;t assume that doing a few blog post or Facebook comments is going to compare to spending $100k a year in traditional marketing.  This is insane for people to think this way and you should blame the Internet liars for doing this to you.  This is the wrong mindset for business as all successful businesses require marketing investment.</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">My Internet Confession!</span></h3>
<p>Here are the mistakes that I made when I tried to leverage the power of the Internet for my business!  This is embarrassing but the following list of admissions is for your benefit as a business owner:</p>

<li>Investing In False Claim Information Courses Instead Of Investing In Expert Consulting</li>
<li>Actually Believing That Online Results Could Be Had With A One or Two Person Army</li>
<li>Thinking That Social Media Marketing Like Facebook, YouTube and Other Could Produce 7 Figures</li>
<li>Rejecting Paid Advertising In Favor Of Insanity</li>
<li>Zero Competitor Analysis and Keyword Research</li>
</ul>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Control Freaks And Perfectionist Fail</span></h3>
<p>What&#8217;s even more embarrassing than the list of Internet marketing mistakes above is that I attempted to master the web alone!  It wasn&#8217;t out of the question to spend thousands of dollars a month in training and even worst, hundreds of hours a month in study.  I did this based on the lies of certain Internet marketers who promised that doing social media would create a 7 figure income.  Moreover, I lost sight of the principles of time and money leverage by failing to realize that I was attempting to be the PR, Yellow Pages, Newspaper, Radio, TV, Exhibit Company, Print Media and Publicist all alone.</p>
<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Power Of A Good Consultant or Online Mentor!</span></h3>
<p>My madness didn&#8217;t stop until the day that I came to realize that I needed to treat my online marketing or Internet business like a business.  I incorrectly thought that the power of the web is that it made traditional marketing virtually  obsolete and that the profits would come from the savings.  That was stupid and a horrific mistake in judgement.  The truth is that had I leveraged the savings into a strategic investment I would have had a massive profit!  Here are some important take aways for business owners:</p>

<h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;">What is the difference between Digital Marketing and Internet Marketing </span></h3>
<p>The short answer is : Social Media. The longer answer is: Corporate Acceptance Let me explain.</p>
<p>Internet Marketing has been around for 5 to 10 years now. It consists of using the internet to find an audience, performing research to offer relevant offers to that audience. In many cases, internet marketers don’t have a product for that audience themselves, but search affiliate networks such as Clickbank to satisfy their prospects.</p>
<p>Of course there are other forms of internet marketing, but the idea very often revolves around that. Because of the intense competition experienced in lucrative affiliate marketing niches, Internet Marketers have come to use a variety of tools and techniques to establish a competitive advantage.</p>
<p>Companies that have a product to sell have been using similar techniques as they became available, and have done so for a long time. But for some reason, they have not admitted to performing “Internet Marketing”. That word just seemed too&#8230;home based. Instead, they’d say that they use information technology, or, create an online platform, or a combination of words that rarely fell back on Internet Marketing.</p>
<p>And then Social Media happened.  Something larger companies could hang their hat on, have meetings about and strategize with. And many of them have done brilliantly well with it.  They soon realized they had to integrate social within their marketing and IT infrastructure, and use more and more online tools that belong to the Internet Marketing world. And the word Digital started to arrive.</p>
<p>I first heard about the term Digital Marketing in March 2010, and when that happened, I thought of digital print and photography rather than of social media and internet marketing.  Digital Marketing is now a well accepted term, used to refer the intersection of social media, communication, media, information technologies and, of course internet marketing.  I recommend listening to the For Immediate Release Podcast by Shel Hotz and Neville Hobson, and regularly visiting the Internet Coaching Circle, where you can find course, coaching and done for you digital marketing services.</p>

<p>By now you have figured out that marketing on the Internet is all about generating good relevant copy.  From an<a href="http://jimjinright.info/seo/"> SEO perspective</a> the most critical thing is keyword research which is 90% of the game.  Once you know your target market and appropriate keywords then you need to generate content that helps you to rank in the SERP&#8217;s.  Many marketers utilize blog post, article directories, parasite sites like Squidoo or Hubpages, etc.  It&#8217;s amazing that more Internet marketers aren&#8217;t using the <strong>power of press releases</strong>.</p>
<h2><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Getting Your Message Out Via Press Releases!</span></h2>
<p>Back in the old days you could go to a PR firm and get them to generate you press releases.  These days it&#8217;s possible to hire copywriters or you can construct your own press release.  The key elements in a press release are to have facts about your business i.e. location, ownership, products offered and contact information.  We recently did a press release for a client <a href="http://www.free-press-release.com/news-coker-floor-design-teams-make-house-calls-1286149872.html">Coker Floor</a> via a free press release site and it was impressive to see the vast syndication of that press release.</p>
<p>The reason why press releases work so well is that the traditional media and other Internet marketing sites want content.  If your press release is nicely drafted and has the appearance of news then it will get widely syndicated.  In fact, press releases can be an excellent and legitimate white hat SEO technique for generating backlinks.  The sites that offer the service for free are an excellent resource but there are some limitations on what you can do i.e. the number of reference links you can have.</p>
<p>Conversely, the paid sites give you much more flexibility on the structure of your press release and they seem to be much more widely syndicated.  In particular, the site PR Web is awesome for doing press releases.  We just did a press release for this same client with PR Web which was amazing to see.  Here is an example of the PR Web press release on<a href="http://www.prweb.com/releases/coker-floor/coker-flooriing/prweb4781214.htm"> Coker Floors</a>.  Once the copywriter produced the content and it was loaded up with the PR agency, in this case PR Web, then we had to wait for the editorial review.  Once the press release was approved it was widely syndicated.</p>
<p>From an SEO perspective a widely syndicated press release can be picked up by traditional media outlets like newspapers who have online editions and this can give you some extra push with your press.  As an Internet marketer getting wide exposure and a diversity of links to your content can further your rankings.</p>
<p>Focus on generating relevant content and building good quality backlinks via the distribution of your content.  Within that process flow blogs, articles and media rich content like video distribution works well for search engine optimization.  As a part of your online marketing strategy, you should seriously consider doing both free and paid press releases.  If you can do it I highly recommend the usage of PR Web for your press releases.</p>
